How to Answer ‘What Are Your Strengths and Weaknesses?’

Why Do Interviewers Ask This Question?

This question isn’t a trap. Employers want to see:

  • How self-aware you are

  • Whether you can evaluate yourself objectively

  • How your traits align with the role

  • Your willingness to grow and improve

A strong answer shows that you’re not only confident in your abilities but also committed to personal development.

How to Answer: “What Are Your Strengths?”

✅ Step 1: Choose Relevant Strengths

Pick 1–2 strengths that are aligned with the job description. These can be technical skills or soft skills like:

  • Problem-solving

  • Communication

  • Adaptability

  • Leadership

  • Time management

  • Technical expertise (e.g., Python, SEO, project management)

✅ Step 2: Back It Up with Examples

Don’t just list your strength—demonstrate it with a short, real-life example or achievement.

✅ Sample Strengths Answer:

“One of my key strengths is adaptability. In my last internship, I was asked to switch projects midway due to shifting priorities. I quickly learned a new tool, adjusted to the new team, and was able to deliver ahead of schedule. I believe this flexibility will help me contribute effectively in a dynamic work environment.”

How to Answer: “What Are Your Weaknesses?”

✅ Step 1: Pick a Real (But Safe) Weakness

Choose a genuine area of improvement, but avoid anything that could seriously impact your performance in the role. Stay away from clichés like “I’m a perfectionist” unless you can explain it meaningfully.

Good examples:

  • Public speaking

  • Delegating tasks

  • Saying "no" to requests

  • Overcommitting

  • Getting too caught up in details

✅ Step 2: Show What You’re Doing to Improve

Demonstrate that you're actively working on your weakness and making progress.

✅ Sample Weaknesses Answer:

“One area I’ve been working on is public speaking. I used to get nervous presenting in front of groups, but I’ve been actively taking steps to improve—like joining a Toastmasters club and volunteering to lead team meetings. Over the last few months, I’ve grown much more confident and articulate in my communication.”

Dos and Don’ts of the Strengths and Weaknesses Answer

Do:

  • Be honest but strategic

  • Tie your strengths to the role

  • Show improvement in your weaknesses

  • Keep answers concise and specific

Don’t:

  • Use fake weaknesses (“I work too hard”)

  • Be overly negative or self-deprecating

  • Sound rehearsed or robotic

  • Say you have no weaknesses
